High Wind Warning Criteria 2025 High Wind Warning. A high wind warning is issued when sustained winds of 40 mph or greater or gusts to 58 mph or greater are expected. In the mountains, when sustained winds of 50 mph or greater and/or wind gusts of 75 mph or greater are expected, then a high wind warning is issued.
When powerful winds and gusts are expected, the national weather service issues a high wind watch or high wind warning. Less than 1/2 inch of sleet.
